Lido Key & St. Armands

Lido Key is surrounded by St. Armands Circle, the Gulf of Mexico & Sarasota Bay. John Ringling purchased Lido Key planning a major tourist attraction. Things did not happen as he planned, but today, Lido Key  has world-class status. Lido has great beaches, plenty of free parking, lifeguards, concessions, picnic tables, & a playground. It is a great beach for a stroll at sunset.  There are numerous vacation rentals on Lido Key from luxurious resort hotels, rental condominiums, apartment efficiencies to motel rooms. Most have views of the Gulf of Mexico, private beaches or beach access. Lido is a great place to purchase property.

St. Armands Circle

St. Armands Circle has sophisticated restaurants, nightclubs, exclusive shops and exotic boutiques. In the center is a circular park dedicated to the memory of John Ringling. St Armands has lush tropical plantings, antique statuary and an elegant international atmosphere with friendly warmth. There are over 130 shops on St. Armands Circle. This island was originally 131 acres and was purchased for $21.71 by Charles St. Amand, a Frenchman. In later deeds his name was mis-spelled and that is the name that has stayed. John Ringling purchased the property in 1917 and planned a development of shops in a circle and residential lots beyond that. The circus elephants were used to help haul the material to build the bridge that joins the island to the mainland. One year later, the bridge was completed, the Ringling Estates was open and there was free bus service to St. Armands for tourists and interested home buyers. Then the depression worsened and land sales went flat. The wooden causeway began to rot, and vegetation began growing through the sidewalks. Until the mid-1950's there was nothing happening on the island, then businesses began opening and tourists started coming. Today, St. Armands is a cosmopolitan shopping area in a tropical paradise.
