Reflections
of the Superintendent
The title above is
most appropriate as I am completing my 43rd and final year with
the Manatee County School System. As
superintendent, I am overseeing the education of the grandchildren of my
first students. As I approach
retirement, I have nothing but positive thoughts about the school district
I have served for so many years. The
schools and this community have been very good to me, and I hope that I
have served them both well.
When I signed my first contract to teach in a junior high, we had
two high schools (one a year old) and were adding a third.
Fourteen elementary schools and five junior high schools housed
over 5,000 students. We were
a dual school system. White
and minority students were taught in separate schools on separate
campuses. My first students
were polite and well mannered (although not perfect) and the parents were
supportive of the schools.
We now have forty-three schools that house the district’s almost
40,000 students. The school
system employs over 5,000 people and is the area’s largest employer.
I still find this community to be supportive of its education
system. The majority of
parents wants the best for their children and wants them to succeed in
school. We are not without
the problems of modern day America but, for the most part, our schools are
positive environments for children. They
are well kept, up-to-date and safe. The
same cannot be said of other schools in our state and nation.
We are blessed with a staff of teachers and support personnel who
care about their jobs. I am
thankful, everyday, for the wonderful people who work for the system.
I cannot count the times they have gone the extra mile for the
students we all serve
When I think back over a career that spans almost half a century, I
am glad that I chose to remain here and proud to be a member of one of the
finest school systems in the state. I
am confident that I am leaving the schools in good hands.
